I love glitter, but, I hate the mess that glitter leaves behind. Even those new glitter printer papers leave a glittery trail. That is why I decided to open Glitter Invitations and Glitter Business Cards. I was very happy when I learned that both GlitterInvitations.com and GlitterBusinessCards.com were both available to be registered. Once I got both domains I started going to work trying to make artwork that looked like it was glitter, but, didn’t have any mess. It was a lot harder than I thought. I then had a great idea, why not just use my camera to photograph the glitter. Well, that’s when I learned that their is a whole art to photography that I didn’t even realize existed.
When you are taking pictures of glitter, it is extremely difficult for the camera to pick up what you are seeing. I tried several cameras, set up lots of different lighting on my kitchen table, etc., and, began taking pictures. Try as I may, I just could not get the photos to turn out right They looked dull, drab, lacked the sparkles that I was seeing, etc. Eventually though after several hours, I was able to get some “okay” shots. They were not great, but, they’d do. I then used these pictures to “make glitter” with an art program. I added little glimmers, and starbursts, etc., to help enhance the photos. From there I started just trying to make designs for business cards and invitations.
It took me a few weeks to master the art of creating glitter and I am still learning something new each day. My stores have been open now for about a month now, and, I try and add something new every few days. As for sales, I’ve made about $10 total in profits. That’s not much, but, I only make 5% profit off my artwork, so, I’ve sold $200 worth of cards and invitations. So, for about 80 hours of work, the cost of the domains and hosting, I haven’t really broken even yet, and, I doubt that I ever will. However, I love making pretty glittery things, so, that in itself is worth it.
Besides GlitterInvitations.com and GlitterBusinessCards.com, I registered GlitterGiftShop.com. I don’t know why, I just didn’t register that domain first. It would have been much easier, and, I could have filled the store with invitations, business cards and everything else. But, I didn’t get that idea until I had already built my other two stores. Thus, I may just let that domain expire.
Here are my latest sales. Thank you to the people whom ordered these.
As I mentioned before, I only make 5% profit selling my glitter “goods”. However, if you would like to make 15% off anything that sells…which is better than what I get, I encourage you to become an affiliate partner at Zazzle. You could open a store and put links to all my artwork and Zazzle will give you 15% of every sale. I don’t mind. The more people I can get to sell my artwork. The better, as I really hate marketing. This blog is about it, and, after 3 years of creating all types of artwork, from Trees of Life, to “glitter”, I still rely on word of mouth advertising. So, thanks for your purchases.
